The new SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit is SAP's central tool for supporting companies as they migrate their legacy data from an SAP or non-SAP source system to the new SAP S/4HANA system.

What is the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit?

The SAP S/4HANA Legacy Transfer Migration Cockpit (LTMC) is the successor to the Legacy System Migration Workbench (LSMW) and is supplied as an integrated tool in SAP S/4HANA. The LSMW is no longer fully supported in SAP S/4HANA. The Migration Cockpit enables companies to migrate data from one or more source systems to SAP S/4HANA by means of templates that can be completed in Excel and imported directly into the SAP system.

The individual steps of Data Migration

1. Migration project: The Migration Cockpit is available via the Migration Cockpit app or transaction LTMC. The first step is to create a new migration project or, if available, select an existing migration project.

2. Migration object: You can now choose from a large number of migration objects that are relevant for your project. These migration objects have the necessary tables and data.

3. Download template: The next step is to download and edit the selected object as an XML or CSV template.

4. Upload file: Once the template has been filled with data and reviewed, you can import it back into the SAP system.

5. Prepare: If errors occur within the file, you can view them after the upload, redownload the file and correct the errors.

6. Mapping tasks: Once the template has been successfully uploaded without errors, the data is mapped from the source system to the SAP S/4HANA system.

7. Simulate: Prior to the real migration, it is advisable to perform a test run to eliminate potential errors before the actual migration takes place.

8. Migrate: After a successful test run, the actual migration can begin. However, once the migration is complete, a reset is no longer possible. If errors occur at this point, the only option is to start a new migration.

9. Monitoring and results: You can now display the results. All activities can be tracked on the Monitoring screen.

Who Is the Migration Cockpit Available To?

It is available to customers who have SAP S/4HANA On-Premise or SAP S/4HANA Cloud. For SAP S/4HANA Cloud, the Migration Cockpit is currently the only tool for cloud-based data migration.

The new SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit is easy to use and implement. Similarly, no programming knowledge is necessary. The Cockpit guides the end user through every single step of the data migration process. The templates can also be filled in Excel and sent to the relevant department for review. Thanks to simulation and error detection before the actual migration, errors can be quickly identified and easily corrected.
